Flicker ADU

Client Work - Residential

Flicker ADU is a completed accessory dwelling unit project in the Hollywood Hills, ~520 sq ft, 1 bedroom, and 1 bathroom, designed under the direction of Tegan Deering-Fitzgerald at ShadowGap. As the Junior Designer on the project, I was responsible for the full FF&E selection, all furniture, lighting fixtures, and artwork throughout the space.

The client’s main purpose for this space was to use as a private living space for any guests staying on the property, separated from the main house. He wanted the space to feel soft and feminine, to be more appealing particularly to his female guests, but still wanted masculine elements to signify that it was part of the same overall home. So the overall objective of the project was to create this balancing act between masculine and feminine design elements.

Living Space

When originally coming up with concepts for this space, I had selected a deep red-orange sectional sofa as the main focal point of the living space. The color choice was bold and masculine while still balancing with the light fabrics and travertine floors picked out by Tegan, but ultimately we switched it out for this much softer blue serpentine sofa from Holly Hunt with a more feminine curved frame to complement the circular shapes of the coffee table from Restoration Hardware and Timothy Oulton lighting fixture overhead. Instead, to add back the masculinity the client asked for, I chose the darker bronze and walnut wood finishes of the tables and accents around the room. I’m particularly proud of the inclusion of the stunning credenza from Arteriors in this rich aged bronze with an abstract brass accent along the top.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, I selected a soft and rounded upholstered bed frame in this mushroom taupe velvet from CB2. This taupe color can also be tied back into the rug choice in the living space. Paired with dark walnut nightstands from Restoration Hardware and amber glass pendant lights from Shades of Light on each side on the bed, which look stunning against the warm tinted mirrored wall featured behind the bed, and pulling the blue from the sofa into the bedroom by adding light muted blue colored rugs under the bed and in the walk-in closet.

Bathroom

The bathroom was kept minimal and modern. We used brass fixtures to keep the warmth of the rest of the space. The light fixtures on each side of the mirror are from Etsy and give a nice ambience in both upward and downward directions to give a soft glow, instead of a harsh direct light when standing in front of the vanity. The faucets and knobs all have flat, sleek, modern profiles which help enhance the luxury feel of the space.

Flicker ADU was my introduction to professional-scale FF&E work, the discipline of selecting furniture, fixtures, and finishes not for a hypothetical client, but for a real unit that would be built, lived in, and judged by the people who commissioned it. Working under a principal designer gave me the opportunity to collaborate alongside another designer. Every vendor conversation, every lead time, every substitution when a first choice wasn't available, and that's real experience.
